Dental accidents can happen to anyone. Getting a chipped or broken tooth can be inconvenient, sometimes painful, and can either be a simple cosmetic damage or a more serious situation.

Chipped teeth are one of the most common dental emergencies. If you broke your tooth, don’t panic. You can click here to contact Dr. Paltsev immediately to restore your tooth and ease any pain. You can also send us an email at littlegreenbuilding@gmail.com or call us at 416-769-8135 to restore your chipped teeth in Toronto.

A cracked tooth can be caused by a number of everyday circumstances like falling, getting hit on your face, or chewing on something hard like ice cubes or plastic. If not treated, it could lead to tooth loss and tooth sensitivity among other complications. Having tooth decay can also be a risk factor.

It is important that you handle your chipped tooth with care and contact Dr. Paltsev for emergency treatment.

What to do when you chip your teeth

As soon as the incident occurs, rinse your mouth carefully using warm salt water. This is to prevent potential irritants from accumulating around the tooth. The warm water would also wash the blood away and soothe tooth pain. If there is bleeding, try to stop it by gently applying some pressure to the soft tissues with clean gauze. Bleeding from a tooth requires immediate attention by the dentist. Repeat this process as needed. Then apply a cold compress to your face to reduce swelling. If the pain hasn’t subsided, take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

In some rare cases it is possible to re-attach the broken tooth fragment. If you can, carefully rinse the part of the tooth that broke out immerse it  in milk to keep it from drying out. This could help Dr. Paltsev to attach the tooth back to its original place.

While you wait for your dentist appointment, you can:

  • Protect your tongue and cheeks by applying dental wax to the jagged edge of the split tooth if possible.
  • Cover it with sugarless chewing gum
  • Try to only eat soft foods in the meantime
  • Avoid cold food
  • Wash your mouth with salt water after eating

How we treat a chipped tooth

As soon as you stop the bleeding, ease the pain (if any), and preserve the broken tooth, you should focus on getting immediate dental care and book a dental appointment to lessen the risk of infection.

Here are Little Green Building’s dental treatments available to restore chipped teeth.

Dental Filling

Dental fillings can be used to repair chipped teeth. They will be tooth colored to match the rest of the teeth. They resemble your natural teeth in look and feel and can easily close up the crack so that it’s no longer visible. Dr. Paltsev uses a white filling that has the texture of your original tooth so that it feels natural and you’re able to chew again.

Dental crowns

Dental crowns can also be called dental caps. They are a porcelain cover for your chipped tooth. Dental crowns are best for repairing a badly broken tooth, and are worn over the entire tooth. Dental crowns can prevent further damage to the tooth and protect you from pain caused by exposed dentin. You will need to visit our clinic twice if you require a dental crown. On your first visit, Dr. Paltsev will create the mold for your crown, and on the second, he will cement it in place. You will wear a temporary crown until your second visit.

Dental veneers

Dental veneers, also called porcelain veneers, are required where there has been severe damage to the tooth. Porcelain veneers will be placed over the front of your chipped tooth to achieve a smooth natural look. They resemble the look and feel of your natural tooth. If you also want to improve your smile, a porcelain veneer can be placed over several of your teeth for a uniform look. They can last for ten to twenty years making them an overall great choice.

Root canal treatment

If the damage to the tooth is large enough that it gets to the tooth pulp, then you may require a root canal. In this case, most of your tooth may have been broken off by the accident. During a root canal procedure, Dr. Paltsev will have to place a pin or post into the canal of your tooth to build up the structure enough for a crown. He will then place a temporary crown and have you return for a permanent one that helps restore your smile.
