Tooth Extraction in High Park

WHAT IS TOOTH EXTRACTION?

Sometimes a tooth can get severely damaged to the extent that it cannot be restored. Such situations call for total tooth extraction. Tooth extraction involves removing the tooth entirely from it’s socket. After the extraction, the patient is advised to take care of the area to facilitate proper healing. When not sure whether your tooth should be extracted, ask Dr.Paltsev to conduct an examination and give you appropriate guidelines. Some reasons for getting tooth extraction include:

Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction

Tooth Decay

In some cases, the tooth can be severely damaged such that it can’t be fixed through a filling, crown or root canal. The cavity may be too large, and the dentist recommends that the only reasonable solution is to get it extracted to avoid further pain.

If the tooth is fractured beneath the gum line

When chewing food, teeth are put under immense impact especially the lower molars. If you have an improper bite of a hard substance, the tooth may get exposed and fracture beneath the gum line. In such scenarios, there’s little that can be done to save it and the only solution is to go to a dentist for an extraction.

Crowded teeth

Sometimes someone may have more teeth than what their jaw can accommodate. To avoid dental problems, Dr.Paltsev may recommend the tooth be extracted. In some cases, patients may have malpositioned teeth and can’t achieve a straight smile unless a specific tooth is removed. Scenarios of crowded teeth are common, and it’s easy to deal with them.

In case of a stuck baby tooth

A stuck tooth is a rare occurrence. However, sometimes a baby tooth can get lodged between two teeth. After the adult tooth erupts through the gum line, the baby tooth gets caught up and is not able to fall out of the way. A person ends up with an unwanted baby tooth. However, the baby tooth falls off when it’s ready but in case its stuck, the help of a dentist is necessary. It’s advisable not to forcefully remove a baby tooth because it damages the tooth roots and its often very painful.

Before the decision to get your tooth extracted get in touch with Little Green Building to see if other options can be used to save it first. Remember, tooth extraction is the last option and should only be used if there are no other alternatives. This is when the tooth has decayed severely and its wholly damaged.

We have already discussed the possible reasons and situations where your High Park dentist may advise you on a tooth extraction. Let’s discuss, what this procedure involves:

The tooth extraction procedure can be of two types: a simple extraction and a surgical extraction

Simple Tooth Removal

This method is applicable when your tooth that needs to be extracted is visible in the mouth. First of all, the affected tooth is loosened using an elevator. Next, your dentist will simply use forceps to extract the tooth.

Surgical Tooth Extraction

A surgical tooth extraction procedure is advised when the tooth is not seen in the mouth or if it’s broken along the gum line. In this method, your surgeon will make a small incision on your gum to extract the affected tooth.

Whether it is a surgical extraction or a simple one, the steps involved in the procedure are more or less the same. These are as follows:

1. Numbing The Affected Tooth

The very first step in the tooth removal procedure involves numbing it using anesthesia on the gum, the tooth and the surrounding bone tissue.

The anesthetic is usually given through a thin needle, so you can expect a slight tingling sensation. The sensation or pain you’ll get will depend on the type of bone tissue it is given.

2. Extraction of The Tooth

Next, the affected tooth will be removed from the socket. The tooth is encased firmly in the jawline socket. It is held tightly by a fibrous tissue called a ligament. To extract the tooth, the dentist first enlarges the socket and then carefully separates the tooth from the ligament. The last step is to pull the tooth out of the socket.

The tools used in this step include elevators and extraction forceps. These tools are used to grasp and remove the tooth.

3. Closing The Vacant Space

Once your tooth is removed, it will cause a vacant space. Therefore, your dentist will close the socket in the following way :

First, he will remove the dead or infected tissue by gently scraping the sides of the socket. Your socket will also be compressed slightly to bring it back to its original size. The socket will then be washed to remove any loose bone or a leftover fragment.

At this step, expect the dentist to stitch the vacant socket in case of a surgical procedure.

4. Controlling The Bleeding

To control the bleeding, your dentist will place a gauze on the socket and ask you to bite on it firmly to control bleeding.

5. Reduce Swelling

You will be advised to use an ice pack on your jawline to reduce inflammation and swelling.

6. After Care

Once your tooth is extracted, you’ll need some time to fully recover. During this time, your dentist will suggest you bite gently, eat soft foods, avoid smoking/drinking, avoid applying pressure to your teeth etc.
