Why We Created the Chair Time Calculator

Dental anxiety often stems from the unknown. By giving our patients a clear expectation of their dental appointment length, we aim to make your visit as stress-free and predictable as possible.

Using this tool helps you:

  • Plan Your Schedule: Accurately block off time in your calendar for work or family commitments.

  • Reduce Anxiety: Knowing you will only be in the chair for 30 minutes for a filling can provide great peace of mind.

  • Coordinate Multi-Step Treatments: Easily see when complex treatments like crowns or dentures will require multiple visits.

Dental Procedure Times: What to Expect

Every smile is unique, and the exact time can vary based on your specific oral health needs. However, here is a general breakdown of average dental procedure times you can expect at our Bloor West clinic:

  • Recall Exam & Cleaning: A standard checkup usually takes about 5 minutes for the exam, while the scaling (cleaning) portion typically ranges from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on when your last cleaning was.

  • Dental Fillings: Most fillings are completed within 30 to 60 minutes.

  • Root Canals: Because this requires precise work to clean the inside of the tooth, a root canal generally takes between 45 and 90 minutes.

  • Extractions: A simple tooth extraction usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, which includes time for the area to become fully numb.

  • Crowns & Dentures: Major restorative work requires multiple phases. For a crown, expect two appointments (a 90-minute prep visit and a 45-minute insertion). Dentures usually require 2 to 4 shorter visits of about 30 minutes each.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a first-time dentist appointment take?

If you are a new patient, your first visit will typically take a bit longer usually around 45 to 60 minutes. This allows us to take comprehensive X-rays, review your full medical history, and perform a detailed specific or comprehensive exam.

Why does my cleaning time vary?

The length of a dental scaling (cleaning) depends heavily on how much plaque and tartar have built up. If you visit us every 3 to 6 months, your cleaning will likely be closer to 15 or 30 minutes. If it has been a few years, it may take 45 minutes or require a second visit.

Does the estimated time include waiting room time?

Our calculator estimates the actual “chair time” (the time spent in the treatment room). At Little Green Building, we pride ourselves on running on time, but we recommend arriving 5 to 10 minutes early to settle in and update any necessary paperwork.
